Lesson 1: How to Hold Your Yarn and Hook
Hello Lovely!
Learning to crochet is a beautiful, relaxing skill — and it all starts with how you hold your yarn and hook. This short lesson will help you feel comfortable and confident before you make your first stitch.
What You’ll Need
- Medium-weight yarn (#4 Worsted Weight)
- 5mm / H-8 crochet hook
- Scissors
Step 1: Get Comfortable with Your Hook
There’s no single “right” way — choose what feels natural.
- Pencil grip — hold it like a pencil for light control.
- Knife grip — hold like a knife for more stability.
Lovely tip: Try each for a few minutes — whichever feels relaxed is the right one for you.
Step 2: Hold Your Yarn
Yarn tension controls stitch size:
- Drape the yarn over your left index finger.
- Let it rest across your other fingers.
- Hold the yarn tail gently in your palm.
Step 3: Bring It All Together
Right hand: hold the hook. Left hand: guide the yarn. Use thumb and middle finger of left hand to steady the small loop under the hook — this helps your stitches stay neat.
Practice Makes Progress
Spend a few minutes each day simply holding yarn and hook, moving the yarn with your hook, and finding comfortable tension. The goal is comfort, not perfection.
Thanks Lovely, and happy crocheting!
